How to Oil Cleanse (And Why It’s So Amazing)

Not gonna lie, when I first heard about oil cleansing I was super skeptical about it.

For someone with acne-prone sensitive skin, there was zero chance I was going to test out a new product like that.  Not to mention, the idea of putting oils directly on my skin seemed completely counterintuitive.  Wouldn’t that make me break out?!

The question on my thoughts of oil cleansing was becoming more frequent that not, so eventually I had to look into it more.  After reading a fair bit about it and learning some more form a holistic aesthetician, I was convinced it was time for me to give it a try.

I started out with double cleansing first, which I suggest anyone who hasn’t tried oil cleansing start out with.  Double cleansing is where you cleanse with the oil, then cleanse a second time with a different cleanser, like a gel or foam cleanser afterwards, to remove any excess oil from the first step that might still be lingering.

I happen to have rather dry skin so over time the double cleansing was a little much for my skin and I eventually dropped the second cleanse.  My skin seemed to like this better so I kept on it with just the one oil cleanse and not a second cleanse.

Now, I don’t wear a lot of make-up for starters - a bit of blush and that’s about it so I was able to get away with just the single cleanse.

Who Oil Cleansing Is For

In my opinion, every skin type and skin condition can benefit from oil cleansing but I highly suggest you start with two things:

  • Double cleansing. So follow up your oil cleanse with a gel or foaming cleanser.

  • Start low and go slow. As in, don’t do it every day. Maybe start with once every other morning then slowly work up to twice daily. This will help you be able to gauge if your skin is enjoying it or not.

The technique of HOW to oil cleanse is also a big deal.  If you’re not doing it properly you won’t reap the benefits of this technique.
